Hail Damage And Your RV Roof

March 16, 2023

The all too familiar sound of hail pounding down on a roof is enough to make your skin crawl. And when you’re traveling in your RV, hunkered down to wait out the storm, the sound is almost unbearable! When the storm finally passes and you are able to inspect the damage, you are probably wondering how bad the damage is and how urgently you need to seek out a repair team.

When hail hits your RV, it’s common to wonder at the extent of damage and what it will take to ensure your roof is properly repaired. A professional RV repair shop is the key to repairing your damaged roof and helping you get back to your travels.

Is Hail A Threat To My RV’s Roof?

Hail can be a threat to any vehicle surface it hits, but especially to RV roofs. Your RV’s roof is a large target and is more vulnerable than other vehicle roofs and more costly to repair. The process of repairing a damaged RV roof looks different than the process to repair a car or other vehicle that has sustained hail damage. For most motor vehicles, the process known as paintless dent repair (PDR) is enough to fix any damage from hail.

When it comes to RVs, PDR is not enough to repair your RV’s roof after hail damage ensues. RVs are mainly composed of fiberglass, wood and aluminum, all of which pose more difficulty to repair, resulting in a more costly and longer repair process.

Signs That Your Roof Is Damaged

If your RV has endured a recent hailstorm, it’s not rocket science to determine whether it received any hail damage. However, hail damage may affect parts of your RV and its roof differently. Take a look at your RV roof and its features to determine the true extent of the hail damage. Pay special attention to the areas on your roof including your rooftop AC, solar-panels, skylights, and any vents. These areas are particularly susceptible to damage and they require immediate attention to prevent further damage from occurring.

How To Avoid Hail Damage

Depending on where you travel to and where you store your RV, it is possible that hail damage isn’t altogether avoidable. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t prepare for the possibility of hail damage though. Here are a few simple steps you can take to help mitigate damage from a hail storm:

  • Utilize vent covers
  • Use an extra thick cover for added protection
  • Park under a garage or covering, if available
  • Seek shelter near a building
  • Use a hail blanket

Unfortunately, hail damage isn’t avoidable 100% of the time. If you’re traveling it may be difficult to outrun a storm or get out of the storm’s path, but doing so could protect your rig from some damage. However, if your RV is parked at your property and is not under a shelter, use a cover or a hail blanket to lessen the blow of the damage.
